This is the first street game that Ilvy Nijokiktien photographed, a try-out for the Jaarbeursplein…
Damrak Street Action
Today was go-to-Amsterdam day. I went to Damrak, the street that connects the station to the heart of town. It has a distinctive bee-hive patterned sidewalk that I planned to adopt and adapt. Which we did, Eldest daughter did the crayoning today, I made the pictures, also some footage that I have yet to look at.
The weather wasn’t really great for our purposes. Or else it is the shopping instinct that drives people to ignore all else: hardly anyone missed a beat. A few people came out of step, most didn’t even see. So- not a great success.
Later: this conclusion was too hasty. Checked the footage, some beautiful takes! And looking at it closely, I saw that people did change their step. Not a great many, maybe three or four in a hundred, but it’s there. So much for the despised medium of video – it has now proven its uses.
Later: check the video I made.
