Time capsule
And I am on my way again! This time it’s a train voyage I’m undertaking – a nine hours luxury ride to Berlin. I love travelling by train – it is like stepping in a time capsule, being neither here nor there but in an inbetween, a transit space. Responsibilities are shelved and the brain is set on auto-motion. Some of my best ideas surfaced during a train-ride-brain-dead period.
I have the inevitable chalks in my suitcase – let’s see if Berlin provides another opportunity for playful surprises. Experiment no 007 started in Berlin, and it is great to see how it developed from my first tries in Friedrichshain park to the point where I am now.
I’m thinking about other ways to draw lines, too. When chalking near Dam Square in Amsterdam I noticed the pigeons that are there in great numbers, and I’ve been thinking ever since of ways and means to organise those birds in straight lines or circles, following my footsteps. I’d need to go to Dam Square very early in the morning and try out what a little birdfeed would do. For the Dutch, the pigeons on Dam Square are emblematic.
These bird lines would be even more temporary than those done with chalk. Which is something I like. I have this desire to vanish in my own traces one day. This being a very difficult thing to accomplish, I’m settling for now for leaving traces that vanish.
