The moat that surrounds Zaltbommel is full of art: Pracht in de Gracht. ‘Magnificence in the Moat’ would be a close translation. Not that it is really magnificent – it’s a bit boring really. The diver shown here might be the best piece of all, and that’s not saying much. It has a playful quality that I like, and one that is notably lacking in most pieces of art. But a quality I appreciate highly. I’ve been thinking about how to organize playfulness – bottle it, even, to make it stay – but in adults it is a fleeting sensation.
