EeM

The EeM project brings the Eemland region to life as an entity that embodies the intricate relationship between nature, human intervention, and technology. EeM personifies the landscape, giving it a voice to communicate its history and current challenges. By engaging directly with this living persona, the project allows viewers to explore how centuries of land use and environmental change have shaped the region, while also addressing its future in the face of climate change and urbanization.

In EeM, the Eemland area becomes a sentient being, shaped by natural forces, human activity and technology. The waterways, dikes, and fields of the region become parts of its physical body, while its voice is crafted from the region’s historical development and ecological shifts. The project draws attention to the tension between human control and the natural environment, as the persona speaks about its experience with centuries of reclamation, agriculture, and urbanization.

EeM serves multiple functions in my artworks, acting as both a conceptual framework and an interactive element that deepens the engagement with the Eemland landscape. It provides a voice for the landscape, allowing for direct communication with visitors, as seen in works like Polderfluisteraar, where EeM responds to questions about ecological futures and human impact. Additionally, EeM functions as a critical lens through which the effects of land use, technological advancements, and environmental changes are explored, offering a unique, narrative-driven way to visualize these complex relationships.

By embodying the landscape itself, EeM transforms passive observation into an active, participatory dialogue, making the invisible layers of history, ecology, and human intervention tangible in each piece. This persona also allows for greater flexibility in artistic exploration, facilitating a deeper inquiry into themes of sustainability, spatial planning, and the consequences of climate change
